Okay, so I’ve been seeing these “white tea party gloves” all over my Pinterest feed, and they’re just so cute. I decided I had to try making a pair myself. I mean, how hard could it be, right?
First, I gathered my materials. I already had some white fabric scraps leftover from another project – score! – so that saved me a trip to the store. I also grabbed some lace trim I’d been hoarding, my sewing kit, and a pair of old gloves to use as a kind of pattern.
I started by tracing the old gloves onto the fabric. I just laid them flat and drew around them with a fabric marker. Seemed simple enough. Then, I cut out the shapes, making sure to leave a little extra room around the edges for seams. I think they call that a “seam allowance”…or something.
Next, I pinned the two pieces of fabric for each glove together, inside out. This part was a little tricky because the fabric kept slipping. I probably should have used more pins. Note to self for next time!
Now for the sewing! I threaded my needle (after, like, five tries – I’m not the best at that) and started stitching along the edges. I mostly used a simple backstitch, because that’s the only one I really know how to do well. It took a while, and my stitches definitely weren’t perfect, but hey, it’s handmade, right? It’s supposed to have that “rustic” charm.
Once sewn all way arround, I carefully turned the gloves right-side out. This was the moment of truth! They actually looked like…gloves! Kind of!
The last step was to add the lace trim. I pinned it around the wrists of the gloves, and then I very carefully hand-stitched it * part took the longest and was most diffcult, because I didn’t want the stitches to show too much on the lace.
And…that’s it! My very own white tea party gloves. They’re not perfect, but I made them, and that’s pretty cool. I can’t wait to wear them to my next afternoon tea, I might even try making another pair with some different colored fabric or maybe some beads!
