Okay, so I recently got into collecting vintage tea sets, and let me tell you, it’s a rabbit hole! I started this journey after watching too many period dramas and ended up thinking, “Hey, I want a fancy tea set too!” Today, I want to share my experience with a Mitterteich Bavaria tea set I snagged.
First things first, I scoured the internet. I mean, I really went deep – eBay, Etsy, online antique shops, you name it. I was looking for something that was both pretty and, you know, didn’t cost a fortune. I wasn’t aiming for museum quality, just something nice for afternoon tea with friends (or, let’s be real, mostly by myself).
After a few days, I stumbled upon this Mitterteich Bavaria set. It wasn’t perfect, but it had this charming floral pattern and a delicate gold trim. It looked vintage, but not too vintage, if you know what I mean. I did a bit of quick research on the Mitterteich mark on the bottom of the pieces. I learned that Mitterteich is a German porcelain company, and Bavaria is a region in Germany. The mark helped me figure out roughly how old the set might be.
The seller had it listed for a decent price, but I always try to haggle a bit. I sent a polite message asking if they’d be willing to come down a little, and they did! Score!
A week later, the package arrived. Let me tell you, I was nervous. I’ve heard horror stories about things arriving broken. I unwrapped everything very, very carefully, layers and layers of bubble wrap. Thankfully, everything was intact! I laid all the pieces out – teacups, saucers, a teapot, a sugar bowl, and a creamer. It was like Christmas morning!
Of course, being a vintage set, it needed a good cleaning. I didn’t want to risk putting it in the dishwasher, so I hand-washed everything with warm water and gentle dish soap. I used a soft cloth to avoid scratching the gold trim. Some of pieces had some minor staining inside. I took some baking soda, mixed with water then scrubbed it gently. The minor staining faded right away.
Finally, the moment of truth! I brewed a pot of my favorite Earl Grey tea, arranged some cookies on a plate, and enjoyed my first cup of tea from my “new” Mitterteich Bavaria set. It felt so fancy! Even if it was just me, it made the whole experience feel special.
This experience is not ended. I continue to search more useful information about this tea set and hope to find more beautiful pieces from Mitterteich Bavaria.
