black tea | February 20th, 2025

So, I’ve been on this tea journey lately, trying out all sorts of different types. And let me tell you, the name “oolong souchong” just sounded so intriguing, I had to give it a shot. I mean, it’s got that double “o” thing going on, sounds kind of fancy, right?

First things first, I got online and did some digging. Turns out, it’s not a super common tea, which made me even more curious. I managed to find some from a reputable seller that folks recommend. I placed the order and patiently waited, seriously, the anticipation was killing me!

Brewing My First Cup

When the package finally arrived, I ripped it open like a kid on Christmas morning. The leaves were dark and twisty, not like the green or black teas I’m used to. I followed the instructions on the package – a good starting point, I figured.

  • I heated up some fresh, filtered water. No tap water for this fancy tea!
  • I measured out the tea leaves, using a teaspoon per cup, just like the package said.
  • I preheated my teapot, because some people online said that is pretty necessary.
  • I poured the hot water over the leaves and let it steep. The recommended time was about 3 minutes, so I set a timer.

While it was steeping, I took a good whiff. It smelled kind of smoky, but also a little sweet. Definitely different from anything I’d had before.

The Taste Test

After the timer buzzed, I poured myself a cup. The color was a beautiful amber, much darker than I expected. I took a sip, and wow, it was a whole new experience. It was definitely smoky, but not in an overpowering way. There was this underlying sweetness, and a kind of smooth, almost creamy texture. It’s hard to describe, really, it’s just something you have to experience.

I’ve been experimenting with different steeping times since then. Longer steeping brings out more of that smoky flavor, while shorter steeping keeps it a bit lighter and sweeter. I even tried adding a tiny bit of honey, which was pretty good, but honestly, I prefer it plain.

I have tried some diffrent brands these days, and I found that they have some slightly different tastes and flavor.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’m really glad I ventured into the world of oolong souchong. It’s a unique and flavorful tea, and it’s definitely earned a spot in my regular rotation. If you’re looking for something a little different, I’d say give it a try. You might just be surprised at how much you like it!
