compostable tea bags

So, I’ve been messing around with this whole composting thing lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a ride. Today, I wanna talk about something that’s been bugging me – compostable tea bags. You see all these “eco-friendly” claims, but can you really just toss them in your compost bin and call it a day?

Well, I started digging into this, and it turns out it’s not that simple. First off, I bought a box of what I thought were totally compostable tea bags – you know, the kind that seems all natural and earthy. They were from Bigelow Tea and looked pretty standard, nothing fancy. I figured, “Great, I can have my tea and compost the bags too!”

My Composting Experiment

So, I started my little experiment. I had this compost bin going in my backyard – a mix of kitchen scraps (the green stuff) and dried leaves from my yard (the brown stuff). It seemed to be doing okay, breaking down pretty nicely. I started adding my used tea bags to the mix, thinking I was doing a good thing.

But after a few weeks, I noticed something off. The tea bags weren’t breaking down. At all. They were just sitting there, looking pretty much the same as when I threw them in. I started to get suspicious. I picked one out, and it felt kinda…plasticky.

I did some more research and found out that a lot of tea bags actually contain plastic – this stuff called polypropylene. Seriously? Plastic in my “compostable” tea bags? That’s when I realized I had to be more careful.

The Real Deal with Compostable Tea Bags

Here’s what I learned:

  • Not all tea bags are created equal. Some are made from natural materials like wood pulp or hemp, and those are usually okay to compost.
  • Even with “compostable” tea bags, you gotta check for staples and other stuff. I started ripping open the bags, taking out the staples, and only composting the paper and tea leaves.
  • Some tea bags are just straight-up plastic. These pyramid-shaped ones are often made from PET, which is definitely not compostable. With these, the best I could do was open them up and compost the tea inside, tossing the bag itself in the trash.

It’s kinda frustrating, to be honest. You try to do the right thing, and then you find out there’s all this hidden plastic and extra steps involved. But I guess that’s just how it is. We gotta be more mindful consumers and really pay attention to what we’re buying and throwing away.

From now on, I’m sticking to loose leaf tea or tea bags that I know for sure are 100% compostable. It’s a little more work, but at least I know I’m not adding more plastic to the world. And my compost? It’s much happier now, breaking down like it should.

Anyway, that’s my little tea bag saga. Hope it helps someone out there avoid the same mistakes I made!
