Okay, so I’ve been trying to watch what I eat lately, you know, trying to be a bit healthier. And one thing I really love is black tea. I drink it all the time, like, seriously, all the time. But then I started wondering, does this stuff have calories? I mean, it’s just tea, right?

So I started to look into it. First, I grabbed a few different types of black tea bags I had lying around in my kitchen. I’ve got some English Breakfast, some Earl Grey, you know, the usual stuff. I checked the nutrition labels on the boxes, just to see what they said.

  • Most of the boxes didn’t even list calories. Like, nothing at all.
  • One of them, I think it was the Earl Grey, said something like “less than 1 calorie per serving”.

That got me thinking, maybe plain black tea is basically calorie-free? To be sure, I also grabbed my phone to see what the internet had to say. I typed in “black tea calories” into my browser and read a couple of articles. Most of them confirmed what I saw on the boxes – plain black tea has practically zero calories.

My Findings

It turns out, if you’re just drinking plain black tea, brewed with water and nothing else, you’re pretty much in the clear calorie-wise. It’s like water, but with flavor! But, and this is a big but, it all changes when you start adding stuff. You know, like sugar, honey, milk, or those fancy syrups they have at coffee shops. Those things will definitely add calories.
