darjeeling oolong

tea set | February 11th, 2025

Okay, so I’ve been meaning to mess around with “darjeeling oolong” for a while now. I kept seeing it pop up, and I was like, “What the heck is that?” It sounded kinda fancy, so I figured, why not give it a shot?

Getting Started

First things first, I needed to actually find some. I went to a couple of local tea shops, you know, the ones with all the jars and the smell of, well, tea, everywhere. No luck. I even tried that one fancy grocery store, the one that charges, like, ten bucks for a tomato. Still nothing.

So, I did what any reasonable person would do: I went online. I found a few places that seemed legit, ordered a small amount. I mean, who knows if I’d even like this stuff?

The Brewing Process

The package finally arrived, and honestly, it just looked like…tea leaves. Nothing special. But the smell was something else! Kinda floral, but also a little bit…musky? I don’t know, it was interesting.

I followed the instructions on the website I ordered from. They were pretty specific:

  • Water Temp: Not boiling, but like, just before boiling. I used my electric kettle and just eyeballed it.
  • Steep Time: Around 3-4 minutes. I set a timer on my phone. Don’t want to mess this up.
  • Amount: About a teaspoon per cup. Seemed reasonable.

I used my favorite little teapot – the one with the built-in strainer – poured the hot water over the leaves, and waited. The waiting is always the hardest part.

The Taste Test

Okay, timer went off. Time for the big reveal. I poured myself a cup, and the color was this beautiful golden amber. Looked pretty, at least.

First sip…whoa. Okay, this is different. It’s definitely not like any black tea I’ve ever had. It’s lighter, smoother, and yeah, that floral thing is definitely there. It’s also got this slight sweetness to it, which I wasn’t expecting. I usually take my tea with milk and sugar, but I didn’t even feel the need to add anything to this.

I finished the cup, and then another. I gotta say, I’m impressed. It’s not something I’d drink every day, maybe, but it’s definitely a nice change of pace. It felt kinda…sophisticated, you know? Like I should be wearing a monocle and reading poetry or something.

I shared some with my friend next door. They thought that was good. They said this is a nice try.

Final Thoughts

So, yeah, “darjeeling oolong” – surprisingly good! Would I recommend it? Yeah, I think so. If you’re looking for something a little different from your usual cup of tea, give it a shot. You might just be surprised.
