So, the other day I was chilling with my friend, sipping on some oolong tea, and we got into this random discussion about whether it’s acidic or not. I mean, I drink it all the time, but I never really thought about it. So, I decided to do a little digging myself.
First things first, I grabbed some pH strips I got from my old school days. You know, the ones you used in science class to test stuff? Yeah, those.
I brewed a cup of my usual oolong tea. Made it just like I always do – not too strong, not too weak. I let the water sit for a bit after boiling before I added the tea and let it steep for 3 minutes.
Then, I dipped one of those pH strips into the tea. Waited a few seconds, and… voila! The strip changed color.
It wasn’t super scientific, but it gave me a rough idea. I looked it up after I did all of this, and from what I gathered, oolong tea is usually somewhere between a pH of 6 and 7. A pH of 7 is neutral, with 1 being the most acidic and 14 being the most basic, so this means that oolong tea is a little acidic, just like the pH strip showed.
I guess it makes sense because sometimes I get a bit of a tang when I drink oolong. It’s not like lemon juice or anything, just a tiny bit of that sour taste.
I also learned that the pH can change depending on the kind of oolong tea and the temperature of the water you use. Pretty cool, huh?
So, there you have it. Oolong tea is mildly acidic. Case closed, at least for my curious mind!
