matcha tea
Okay, so the other day I got this craving for something different, you know? Not just my usual cup of joe. I’d heard about this “black dragon oolong tea” and figured, why not give it a shot? I’m no tea expert, but I do enjoy a good cuppa every now and then.
First things first, I needed to actually find the stuff. I hit up a few local stores, no luck. Then, I remembered this little specialty tea shop downtown – score! They had it. It looked pretty fancy, all dark and twisty leaves.
I wasn’t totally clueless. I knew oolong was somewhere between green and black tea, so I figured the water shouldn’t be boiling hot. I heated up some filtered water, probably to around, I don’t know, 190 degrees? I don’t have a thermometer, so I just waited until the little bubbles started forming, but it wasn’t a full-on boil.
I put a couple of teaspoons of the tea leaves into my little infuser – it’s one of those metal ball things. Then, I poured the hot water over it into my favorite mug. I let it steep for maybe three minutes? The package said 3-5, so I went for the lower end figuring I could always steep it longer if needed.
Okay, time to taste! I took the infuser out and took a sip. Wow, that’s…different. It wasn’t bitter at all, which was a pleasant surprise. It had this smooth, almost creamy texture, and a slightly sweet, kind of roasted flavor. It was really, really good!
I ended up steeping the same leaves a couple more times, and each time the flavor was a little different, a little more subtle. Pretty cool, huh?
So, yeah, that’s my black dragon oolong tea adventure. Definitely something I’ll be trying again. If you’re looking for something a bit out of the ordinary, give it a whirl!
