Okay, so I’ve been trying to cut back on caffeine, but I still love my tea. I usually drink Lipton black tea, so I wanted to figure out how much caffeine I was actually getting with each cup.

My Little Experiment

First, I grabbed my usual box of Lipton black tea bags. You know, the yellow box, pretty standard stuff. I flipped it over to read the nutrition facts, expecting to find caffeine content listed there, but no luck! It’s just not there.

So, I went online, did a quick search. I’ve found different numbers!

  • Some sites said around 55mg per 8-ounce cup.
  • Others claimed it was closer to 40mg.
  • Even, a few mentioned it could be as low as 20mg depending on how long you steep the tea bag.

It means it’s not an exact science, it’s a range. But I got a general idea.

Then, I decided to get a bit more practical. I usually brew my tea for about 3-4 minutes. I like it pretty strong. So, based on my online findings, I’m probably getting somewhere in the 40-55mg range for my typical cup.

And, it made me realize I should probably pay more attention to my brew time if I really want to control my caffeine intake. Steeping it for less time, will give a lower caffeine.

So, it’s no a perfect answer, but from my searching and little test, I can estimate my Lipton black tea caffeine amount!
