- Can You Mix Green Tea and Black Tea? Benefits & Taste!
Okay, so today I wanted to try something a little different with my tea. I’m a big tea drinker, usually just straight green or black tea, but I got curious about what would happen if I mixed them. So, here’s how it went down.
First, I grabbed my usual teas. I had some loose leaf green tea – I think it’s a Sencha – and some pretty standard black tea bags. I wasn’t going for anything fancy, just wanted to see what the basic combo would taste like.
I boiled some water, like always. While that was heating up, I got my infuser ready. I decided to go with a 50/50 mix, so I put in a teaspoon of the green tea leaves and then ripped open a black tea bag and dumped that in too.
Once the water was boiling, I poured it over the tea mix in my mug. I let it steep for, oh, I don’t know, maybe 3-4 minutes? I didn’t time it exactly, just kinda eyeballed it until the color looked about right. I figured it needed a bit longer than just green tea, but not as long as I’d do straight black tea.
Okay, so the color was a bit darker than my usual green tea, more of a light brown. The smell was, well, like tea! It had that grassy green tea scent, but with a bit of the stronger, richer black tea aroma mixed in. Honestly, it smelled pretty good.
The first sip was interesting. It definitely wasn’t just like green tea or just like black tea. It had that fresh, slightly vegetal taste from the green tea, but with a bit more body and a bit of that malty flavor from the black tea. It wasn’t bitter, which was good. I think the green tea helped keep it from getting too strong.
Overall, I’d say it was a success! It’s not something I’d probably do every day, but it was a nice change of pace. If you’re looking to mix things up a bit with your tea, I’d say give it a try. It’s a pretty easy experiment, and you might just discover your new favorite blend!
