black tea
This here’s about how many tea bags you need for a gallon of tea. I tell ya, it ain’t rocket science, but gettin’ it just right makes all the difference. My old man, he likes it strong enough to stand a spoon in, but me, I like it just a little lighter.
Well, if you ask me, 8 tea bags is a good number to start with for one gallon of tea. That’s what most folks ’round here say, anyhow. But you know, it all depends on how strong you like it. Some like it weak, some like it strong, just gotta find what suits your fancy. I always say, start with 8, and if it ain’t strong enough, add another one next time. Ain’t no harm in experimentin’ a little. And don’t forget the sugar, a gallon of tea need some sweet to it, you know.
Now, if you’re usin’ them big ol’ family size tea bags, them’s a whole different story. One of them is usually good for half a gallon. So, if you’re makin’ a whole gallon, you’d need just two of them big fellas. That should make it nice and strong, just the way my old man likes it. He always says, “If it ain’t strong enough to wake the dead, it ain’t worth drinkin’.” But don’t forget, if you are using family size tea bag, you might need less sugar than use regular tea bags. Cause family size tea bag makes the tea stronger.
First off, you gotta boil your water. I use about a quart of water to boil, cause that’s about all my kettle will hold. While that’s heatin’ up, I get my tea bags ready. Then, once it’s boilin’, I pour it over them tea bags in a big ol’ pitcher. Let it sit there and steep for a good while, maybe 5 minutes or so. Some folks say longer, but I ain’t got all day to wait for tea. After it’s steeped, I take out the tea bags, add my sugar while it’s still hot, then fill the rest up with cold water to make a gallon. Stir it up good, and there ya have it. Good ol’ sweet tea.
Now, for the sweet part. Sugar is what makes it sweet tea, right? Most folks ’round here use about 1.5 to 2 cups of sugar for a gallon. But again, it’s all up to you. If you like it real sweet, add more. If not, add less. Just remember, you can always add more sugar, but you can’t take it out once it’s in there. So start slow and add a little at a time till it tastes just right.
Some folks like to make what they call “cold brew” tea. I tried it once. You just put the tea bags in cold water and let it sit for a long time, like overnight. They say it makes the tea less bitter. I don’t know about all that, but it’s somethin’ different, I guess. If you wanna try it, use the same amount of tea bags, just let it sit in cold water instead of hot. Me? I’ll stick to my regular way of makin’ tea.
Now, I usually just use regular black tea, but there’s all kinds of tea out there. Green tea, white tea, Earl Grey, you name it. You can use any kind you like, just remember that different teas might need different amounts of tea bags. Like, green tea is usually weaker than black tea, so you might need more bags. Just experiment a little and see what you like best.
Well, that’s about all I know about makin’ a gallon of tea. It ain’t hard, just gotta find what tastes right for you. So go on, give it a try. And remember, the most important ingredient is love. Just kiddin’, it’s sugar. Lots and lots of sugar.
