Well, well, well, lookie here, you wanna know ’bout them valuable antique Chinese tea sets, huh? My old eyes ain’t what they used to be, but I’ve seen a thing or two in my time, and I reckon I can tell ya a bit about these fancy things. You see them all over nowadays, people think they know it all.

First thing, you gotta look under the cup, see if there’s a mark. Like a little stamp or somethin’. That’s where they put the name of the fella who made it. Or the company, I suppose. If you can find that, you’re halfway there. Some of them antique tea sets got famous names on ’em. Like that Royal Doulton, or Wedgwood. Heard of those, I have.

And you look at the picture, the design, they call it. Some of them got flowers, some got birds. Some are plain as an old barn door. The fancier ones, with all the swirls and colors, those are usually worth more. ‘Course, that’s just common sense, ain’t it?

Now, ‘nother thing is, how old is it? You can usually tell by lookin’. Older ones is usually worth more money. These Chinese tea set things, people like the old ones the best. But you gotta be careful, ’cause some folks, they try to make new ones look old. They call it “aging” it, or somethin’. It’s like puttin’ lipstick on a pig, if you ask me. Just sneaky, is what it is.

They got these things now, they call ’em “online.” It’s like a big, giant flea market, but you can’t touch nothin’. You just look at pictures. They got places like, uh, “e-Bay” and “e-Tsy.” I don’t know. Somethin’ like that. You look at the pictures there, see what the prices are. And these antique tea sets, people sell them all over.

You can also try looking at them books about antiques. I ain’t much for readin’, myself. But I seen those books, they got lots of pictures in ’em. And they tell you all about the different kinds of cups and saucers and pots. They even tell you how much they’re worth, sometimes. But I wouldn’t trust it too much. Prices change, like the weather.

• Look for markings under the cup.
• Check the design, see how fancy it is.
• Try to figure out how old it is.
• Look at them “online” places.
• Check them books about antiques.
• Don’t always believe what you read. Prices change!

And then there’s the kind of, uh, stuff it’s made of. Some of them old Chinese tea sets is made of bone, they say. Bone china, that’s it. Sounds kinda creepy, don’t it? But that’s what they call it. And then there’s, uh, Staffordshire salt-glazed, I hear them say that too. And Wedgwood, that one comes up a lot when you’re talkin’ about these valuable antique Chinese tea sets. Wedgwood creamware, or something. And Jasperware, I think it’s called. I don’t rightly know what that means, but I heard it.

So, you see, it ain’t as simple as just lookin’ at a cup and sayin’, “Oh, that’s pretty.” You gotta do your research, they call it. Look things up, ask around. Don’t be afraid to haggle, neither. People always try to get the best price, you know. It’s like buyin’ a used car, only smaller and more breakable.

You gotta check if there are any chips or cracks, too. Nobody wants a broken cup. That’ll lower the price, for sure. And if the whole set is there, with the teapot and the sugar bowl and all that, that’s worth more than just a single cup. It’s like havin’ a whole family, instead of just one young’un.

And if you’re gonna buy one of these antique tea sets, make sure you get it from someone you trust. There’s a lot of crooks out there, just waitin’ to take your money. They’ll sell you a fake, or a broken one, and you won’t know the difference until it’s too late. Then you’re stuck with it, and your money’s gone. It’s a shame, it really is. People got no morals these days.
