how much tea in a tea bag

Okay, so, I’ve been getting into making my own tea lately. You know, trying to be all fancy and stuff. But I was always kinda confused about how much tea is actually inside those little bags we all use. So, I decided to do a little experiment and see for myself.

First, I grabbed a bunch of different tea bags from my cupboard. You know, the usual suspects – some black tea, green tea, and a couple of those herbal ones. Then, I got my kitchen scale, the one I usually use for baking, and zeroed it out. You gotta make sure that thing starts at zero, or the whole thing is messed up, right?

Next, I carefully opened each tea bag. I tried not to spill any of the tea leaves, ’cause that would mess up my count. I poured the tea leaves onto the scale, one bag at a time. I made sure to write down the weight for each one in my little notebook.

Here’s what I found:

  • Most of the regular-sized tea bags had around 2 grams of tea in them. Some were a little bit more, like 2.5 grams, and a few were a tad less, around 1.8 grams.
  • The bigger tea bags, the kind they sometimes use for those iced tea pitchers, had way more – like 4 or even 5 grams each!

After I weighed all the tea, I did some quick math. Turns out, 2 grams is about the same as a teaspoon. So, basically, each regular tea bag has about one teaspoon of tea leaves. That makes sense, right? ‘Cause when I use loose leaf tea, I usually use one teaspoon per cup.

My Results

So, yeah, that’s what I learned from my little tea experiment. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but now I kinda know what I’m working with when I use those tea bags. And it helps me figure out how much loose leaf tea to use when I’m feeling all extra and want to brew it that way. Hope this was helpful for some of you!
