So, the other day, I was having a serious craving for some oolong tea. But then it hit me – I wasn’t really in the mood for a caffeine kick. That got me thinking, is oolong tea decaf?
I started digging around a bit. First, I grabbed the box of oolong tea bags I had in my cupboard. I read through the small print, hoping to find some clear answers. “Each tea bag contains pure Oolong tea enveloped and sealed for freshness, delivering the perfect cup of caffeinated tea.” the box said. Okay, so it’s got caffeine. But how much? It is said that, an 8 oz. cup has about 50-75 mg of caffeine, which is a little more than green tea but a little less than black tea. I always thought it would be caffeine-free, but now I know it is not.
Then, I went on to check more info on the internet. I found out that the caffeine levels can change depending on the type of oolong and how it’s grown. So it’s not the same across all oolong teas. Some might have more, some might have less.
I also learned that, things like hibiscus, chamomile, and rooibos don’t have any caffeine at all. They’re not even from the same kind of plant as regular tea. That’s why they call these kinds “herbal infusions” or “tisanes.”
So, to put it simply, oolong tea isn’t decaf. It does have caffeine, but the amount can vary.
I made myself a cup of oolong tea. If you want something totally caffeine-free, you’d have to go for one of those herbal teas instead.
Anyway, that’s what I learned about oolong tea and caffeine. I just wanted to share my little discovery with you all!
