, I wasn’t totally sold at first. I mean, I love chocolate. Like, really love chocolate. But matcha? That’s a bit…earthy, isn’t it? I pictured something a little…grassy? Maybe a bit like eating a very expensive lawn ornament.

But then, curiosity got the better of me. I’m a sucker for trying new things, especially if they involve chocolate. So, I embarked on a quest – a quest for the perfect matcha green tea chocolate experience. My journey took me through several different avenues, and let me tell you, it wasn’t always smooth sailing.

First, I tried some matcha powder I had lying around (don’t judge, I’m trying to be healthy-ish sometimes). I mixed it into some melted dark chocolate. The result? Let’s just say it was…an experience. The matcha flavor was very strong. Almost overwhelming. The chocolate couldn’t really compete. It was like a muddy swamp in my mouth, only slightly sweeter. Not a win.

Next, I attempted to be a bit more sophisticated. I found a recipe online for matcha green tea brownies. It involved a lot of whisking and double-boiling and things I usually avoid. But hey, I’m dedicated! These brownies were…better. Much better. The matcha was still noticeable, but it worked surprisingly well with the chocolatey richness of the brownies. The slight bitterness of the matcha actually complemented the sweetness of the chocolate. I’d rate it a solid 7 out of 10.

Then came the store-bought stuff. Oh boy, the store-bought stuff. I sampled several different matcha green tea chocolates – bars, cookies, even some weirdly-textured bonbons. Some were surprisingly good. Others…not so much. The quality varied wildly. Some tasted like pure matcha, with a hint of chocolate (again, a bit grassy for my taste). Others had a perfect balance, where the matcha enhanced the chocolate, rather than overpowering it. I even found one that was white chocolate with matcha, and that was surprisingly delightful! The creamy sweetness of the white chocolate really worked well with the subtle earthiness of the matcha. Definitely a contender for my favorite.

This whole experience has taught me a valuable lesson: not all matcha green tea chocolates are created equal. It’s all about finding the right balance. Too much matcha, and it tastes like you’re eating a mouthful of green tea leaves. Too little, and you might as well just eat plain chocolate. The sweet spot seems to be where the matcha provides a unique, slightly bitter and earthy counterpoint to the richness of the chocolate.

Here’s a little table summarizing my findings:

Product Type Matcha Intensity Chocolate Type Overall Rating (out of 10)
Homemade Matcha Chocolate Mixture Bars Very High Dark Chocolate 3
Matcha Green Tea Brownies (Homemade) Brownies Medium Dark Chocolate 7
Brand X Matcha Chocolate Bar Bars High Milk Chocolate 6
Brand Y White Chocolate Matcha Bar Bars Medium-Low White Chocolate 9
Brand Z Matcha Green Tea Cookies Cookies Low Milk Chocolate 5

So, where does this leave me? Well, I’m still on my matcha green tea chocolate journey. I’m definitely more adventurous now. I’m willing to experiment more and explore different combinations. My next step is probably trying to bake something with matcha and white chocolate – maybe some cookies or a cake?

What are your experiences with matcha green tea chocolate? Have you found any hidden gems? I’d love to hear your recommendations!
