This oolong, that oolong, what’s all this fuss about oolong water temp? My oh my, when I was a girl, we just boiled water and poured it on the leaves. Now, they got all these fancy rules. But I guess there’s somethin’ to it, ’cause folks are always talkin’ about it.
So, this oolong tea, they say it’s special. Not like that black tea, or the green one. This one’s in between, like Goldilocks, not too hot, not too cold. They say you gotta get the water temperature just right. Not boiling, mind you. Almost, but not quite. That’s the secret, they say. This oolong tea needs water that ain’t boiling.
Boiling water is too hot. It’ll make the tea bitter, like when you leave it steeping for too long. Nobody likes that. But too cold, and it won’t get all that flavor out. Like tryin’ to get the last bit of honey from the jar with a cold spoon. It just won’t come out right.
Now, they got these fancy thermometers, sayin’ 195 degrees. 195! Who even knows what that means? Back in my day, we didn’t have such things. We just watched the water. When it starts to get those little bubbles, like little fish eyes, that’s when it’s about right. Not a rolling boil, like you’re makin’ potatoes. Just a simmer, like you’re keepin’ the soup warm.
This oolong tea, it’s supposed to be good for you. Lots of good things in it, they say. Keeps you healthy, keeps you young. Maybe that’s why they’re so particular about the water. Gotta get all those good things out, I reckon. Like when you’re makin’ a stew, you gotta let it simmer long enough to get all the flavors melded together.
They say this oolong tea is good hot or cold. I like it hot, myself. Nothin’ like a hot cup of tea on a cold day. Warms you right up, from the inside out. But the young folks, they like it cold, with ice. They put ice in everything these days. Even tea! Can you believe it? Still, I guess it’s good either way. As long as you get that water temperature right.
When you make it cold, they call it iced tea. Oolong Iced tea. You can drink it when it is hot summer. Like when you work a lot in the hot day, you can drink it. It make you feel better. But do not put too much ice. It is not good for your stomach. My stomach is not good, so I know.
It ain’t the same for all teas, though. That black tea, that strong one, it likes boiling water. Gets all that dark color and strong flavor out. And that green tea, it’s delicate. Needs even cooler water than this oolong. So you gotta know what you’re doin’, I guess. Can’t just treat ’em all the same.
So, next time you’re makin’ some of that oolong tea, remember what I told you. Watch that water. Don’t let it boil. Get it just right, around that 195 degrees, if you got one of those fancy thermometers. And if you don’t, just watch for those little fish-eye bubbles. That’s the sweet spot. And this oolong water temp is important.
This oolong tea is not cheap. You don’t want to waste it. Good tea is like good food. You need to cook it right. Water is important. You need good water to make good tea. And the water needs to be hot but not too hot. That is the key. You need to remember.
I like to drink tea. Every day I drink some. Hot tea is good in the morning. It wakes you up. Like the sun, it warms you up. And you can work better. My son, he likes to drink coffee. Coffee is bitter. I don’t like it. But tea is good. Oolong tea is good. But you need to make it right. With hot water, not boiling water. That is very important for oolong tea.
