white tea
Alright, let’s talk about this pekoe cut black tea. I ain’t no fancy tea expert, mind you, just a regular person who likes a good cuppa.
First off, what in the world is “pekoe” anyway? Sounds like some kinda foreign word. Well, from what I gather, it ain’t about the flavor, ya hear? It’s about the leaves, the little young ones right at the tippy top of the tea plant, along with maybe the next two leaves down. They call it “terminal bud leaf pluck,” sounds all highfalutin, but it just means the new leaves, you know? And sometimes, these leaves got a little bit of white fuzz on ‘em, that’s the “white down” they talk about. Fancy that!
Now, this “orange pekoe” thing, that ain’t a flavor either. It’s a way they sort out the black tea, telling you ’bout how good it is, where it’s from, and how big the leaves are. So, if it says “orange pekoe” on the box, it’s supposed to be the good stuff, the whole leaves, not all broken up. Some folks say it’s a “premium quality” tea, which I guess means it’s supposed to be better than the other stuff.
So, “pekoe” means those little baby leaves, and “orange pekoe” is a way they grade the tea. Got it? Good. Now, pekoe cut black tea, that’s just black tea made with those pekoe leaves, but they’re cut up a bit. Makes it easier to brew, I reckon.
Now, they got all different kinds of this pekoe tea. Some from Ceylon, which is now called Sri Lanka, I heard. They say that Ceylon tea is real good, “premium” they call it. And you can get it in bags big enough to make gallons of tea! Imagine that, gallons! Enough to last you a whole week, maybe more. And you can get it hot or iced, whatever you fancy.
And let me tell ya, there’s a whole bunch of brands out there. Capit’l T, Twinings, Tea India, Harney & Sons… I can’t keep track of ’em all. Some are cheap, some are expensive, I guess it just depends on what you’re lookin’ for and how much money you got to spend.
I ain’t tried every brand, mind you, but the ones I’ve had are pretty good. They all taste like black tea, you know? Not too bitter, not too sweet, just right. Perfect for sippin’ on while you’re sittin’ on the porch, watching the world go by.
To sum it up, pekoe cut black tea is just black tea made with those little young leaves. It’s got caffeine, it’s easy to make, and you can find it pretty much anywhere. It ain’t fancy, but it’s good. And that’s all that matters to me, ya know? A good, honest cup of tea.
So, next time you’re at the store, grab yourself a box of pekoe cut black tea. You won’t regret it. It’s a good, plain tea, nothin’ fancy about it, just the way I like it.
