tea tree oil and head lice

Okay, so, I’ve been dealing with a bit of a, um, “situation” lately. You know, those tiny little buggers that love to make a home in your hair? Yeah, head lice. My kid brought them home from school, and before I knew it, we were all scratching our heads like crazy. I tried a bunch of over-the-counter stuff, but it was like those little monsters were immune to everything.

So, I started digging around online, desperate for something, anything, that would actually work. And that’s when I stumbled upon some talk about tea tree oil. Apparently, it’s a natural way to get rid of these little pests. I was a little skeptical, but hey, I was willing to try anything at that point.

I went out and bought some pure tea tree oil from the local health store. It smelled pretty strong, kind of like eucalyptus, but not unpleasant. Then, I mixed a few drops of the tea tree oil with some olive oil. I read somewhere that you shouldn’t put tea tree oil directly on your skin because it can be irritating, so diluting it is key. I made a mixture about 1 part tea tree oil and 3 part olive oil.

  • First, I tested a little bit of the mixture on the inside of my arm, just to make sure there wasn’t any kind of allergic reaction or anything.
  • Waited about 30 minutes, and everything seemed fine. No redness, no itching, all good.

Then, came the fun part. I applied the oil mixture to my daughter’s hair, making sure to really massage it into her scalp and all the way down to the ends of her hair. It was a bit messy, but not too bad. Then, I covered her hair with a shower cap, just to keep the oil from getting everywhere.

The Waiting Game

We left the oil in for about 2 hours. She watched some TV, I did some chores, and we just kind of hung out. After the time was up, I used a fine-toothed comb, one of those special lice combs, and started combing through her hair, section by section. And let me tell you, it was kind of gross but also super satisfying to see those little buggers coming out.

I kept combing until I didn’t see any more lice or nits (those are the eggs). Then, I washed her hair with regular shampoo and conditioner. I repeated this whole process a few more times over the next week, just to make sure we got rid of all of them. And guess what? It actually worked!

The tea tree oil seemed to do the trick. We’re all lice-free now, and I’m so relieved. I’m definitely keeping a bottle of tea tree oil on hand, just in case those little critters ever try to make a comeback.
