Okay, so I saw this “white tea hat” thing trending and thought, “Why not?” I’m always up for a little DIY project, especially if it involves something I can wear. Plus, I had some leftover materials from a previous craft adventure, so it felt meant to be.

First things first, I gathered my supplies. I already had:

  • Some white fabric, I don’t remberber it is cotton or not.
  • A basic sewing kit (needle, thread, scissors, you know the drill).
  • Some old, bendy wire I’d saved from…something. Can’t remember what, but it was perfect!

I didn’t really have a pattern. I figured, it’s a hat, how hard can it be? I’d just have to do it. My first step was decided which style I want. I chose the easiest one.

I started by cutting out a big circle from the white fabric. I used a large mixing bowl as a template, ’cause, hey, it was the right size! Then, I cut out a smaller circle from the center of that, leaving me with a giant donut shape. This was going to be the brim.

Next, I needed to make the top part of the hat. I roughly measured my head (with a piece of string, no less – very professional, I know) and cut out a rectangle of fabric that would fit around, with a little extra for seam allowance. I folded this rectangle in half and sewed up the short side, creating a tube.

Now for the tricky part: attaching the tube (the top of the hat) to the donut (the brim). I carefully pinned the tube to the inner circle of the donut, making sure it was evenly distributed. Then, slowly and steadily, I hand-sewed the two pieces together. I am not really good at sewing. It took a while, and my stitches were definitely not perfect, but hey, it held!

Next up was the wire. I carefully inserted the wire all around the outside of the brim, to give it some shape and structure. Sewing over the wire was a bit tough, but I managed. I used some pliers to bend the ends of the wire together and make sure they didn’t poke out.

The Result

And…that’s it! My very own white tea hat. It’s a little wonky, definitely not store-bought quality, but I made it! And that’s pretty cool. I can wear it out for a sunny day!
