ginger tea
Okay, so, today I wanted to try something new in my kitchen, and it turned out pretty interesting. I decided to mess around with making a white tea lavender drink. I’ve heard a lot about how calming both white tea and lavender can be, so I thought, why not combine them?
First off, I gathered my ingredients. I had some loose white tea leaves – the Silver Needles kind, which are supposed to be super high quality, and some dried lavender that I usually use for making those scented sachets. I also grabbed some honey from the cupboard, thinking it might be nice to sweeten the tea a bit.
I boiled some water in my kettle. While waiting, I measured out about a teaspoon of the white tea leaves and a half teaspoon of the dried lavender. I put them together in my tea infuser. Once the water was ready, I poured it over the tea and lavender in the infuser, which I had placed in my favorite mug. I made sure not to use boiling water, though, because I know white tea can get bitter if the water’s too hot – let’s say around 175°F.
I let it steep for about five minutes. While waiting, the smell that filled my kitchen was just amazing. It was like a mix of floral and earthy scents, very relaxing. I could see the color of the water slowly changing to a pale, golden hue.
After the five minutes, I removed the infuser. The tea looked pretty, and the aroma was even better. I decided to add a little bit of honey, just about a teaspoon, and stirred it in. I tasted it, and it was good, but I felt like something was missing.
That’s when I started to experiment a little. I remembered reading somewhere that white tea goes well with delicate flavors like pear or apricot. I didn’t have any fresh fruit, but I did find a bottle of blueberry juice in the fridge. I added just a splash to the tea, and wow, it made a difference! It added a subtle fruity undertone that complemented the lavender and white tea really well. I also put some ice cubes in the mug to make it iced tea.
It’s definitely something I’ll be making again. Maybe next time, I’ll try adding a bit of lemon or some fresh berries if I have any on hand. This whole experience just goes to show that sometimes, a little experimentation in the kitchen can lead to delicious results!
